1형 당뇨병을 앓는 수유모가 아기에게 젖을 먹일 때 젖을 먹이는 수유모 자신과 아기의 건강에 특별히 더 주의해야 할 점이 많다.
분만 후 산모의 혈당이 정상적으로 내려갈 수 있다.
그래서 당뇨병을 앓는 산모가 모유수유를 할 때의 당뇨병이 일시적으로 좋아지고 인슐린의 치료 용량이 낮아질 수 있다.
그러나 당뇨병을 앓는 수유모가 섭취하는 음식물의 종류와 칼로리의 양과 혈당의 농도를 특별히 더 관심을 갖고 조절해야 한다.
1형 당뇨병을 앓는 엄마에게 태어난 신생아의 혈당이 생후 2~3일경까지 상당히 낮아질 수 있고 심지어 심한 신생아 저혈당증이 생길 수 있다.
신생아의 혈당을 위에서 설명한대로 측정하고 조기 모유수유를 시작하고 때에 따라서 인공영양도 조기에 먹이기 시작한다.
때로는 신생아의 혈당이 아주 낮아 신생아 저혈당증이 생기면 포도당 정맥주사로 저혈당증을 치료하기도 한다.
당뇨병이 있는 엄마에게 태어난 신생아의 대부분은 분만 예정일보다 더 일찍 태어날 수 있고 출생 후 호흡기 계통에 이상이 생길 수 있다.
그에 대한 적절한 예방적 치료와 조치를 적절히 취해야 한다.
당뇨병이 있는 산모는 감염병에 더 잘 걸릴 수 있고 젖을 먹일 때 감염성 유방염 등에 걸리지 않게 조심하고
젖꼭지에 진균 감염병이 생기지 않게 조심해야 한다.
