어린이들은 거의 무엇이든지 손에 닥치는 대로 입안에 집어넣고 빨고 먹고 마시고 노는 경향이 있다. 그래서 화학물질이나 독극물 등에 중독되기 쉽다.
화학물질이나 독극물 등에 중독되지 않도록 미리 예방해야 한다.
어린이는 석유, 청소용 화학물질, 살충제, 비료, 페인트, 페인트 신너, 강산이나 강알칼리 등을 마시거나 먹고 중독 될 수 있다.
집에서 화학물질을 사용한 후 화학 물질을 담은 용기의 뚜껑을 잘 닫은 후 어린 영유아들의 손에 닿지 않는 안전한 장소에 보관해야 한다.
쓰고 남은 화학물질을 담았던 본래 용기에서 다른 용기로 옮겨 담지 말아야 한다.
요즘 대부분의 가정은 청소용 화학물질, 소독용 화학물질, 살충제, 살균제 등을 거의 매일 사용하고 이런 화학물질을 집안 이곳저곳에 방치하기도 한다.
어린 영유아들이 이런 화학물질을 갖고 놀다가 마시거나 몸에 쏟아 화학 물질에 중독될 수 있고 하학물질성 화상을 입을 수 있다.
안전하게 보관하고 사용하는 데 많은 주의가 필요하다.
- 화학 물질·약물·독극물 중독 참조
- 과산화수소를 마셨을 때(H₂O₂ ingestion),
- 화학물질이나 독성물질, 또는 약물이 피부에 묻었을 때,
- 화학물질로 인한 눈의 화상(화학물질 눈 화상) 참조.
화학물질을 쓰기 전에 용기에 쓰여 있는 사용 주의사항을 잘 읽어보고 사용 후 어린이의 손에 닿지 않는 안전한 곳에 보관해야 한다.
화학물질 중독사고가 생겼을 때 응급 치료용으로 쓸 수 있는 활성 탄말 등을 의사의 처방과 지시에 따라 집안에 보관할 수 있다.
