요즘 소아청소년들이 쇼핑 몰에서 에스컬레이터 또는 승강기를 타고 지나 가다가 경미한 사고내지 생명을 위협할 수 있는 큰 사고를 입는 경우가 생기는 것을 가끔 볼 수 있다.
연간 약 2,000명의 미소아청소년들이 에스컬레이터 또는 승강기에 관련된 부상을 입었다고 한다(출처: Pediatrics).
에스컬레이터 또는 승강기가 정상적으로 기능하지 않아서도 안전사고가 날 수 있지만 대부분의 에스컬레이터나 승강기에 관련된 사고는 부모들이 어린이들을 잘 돌 보지 않아 어린이가 에스컬레이터나 승강기에서 넘어지거나 입고 있는 옷이나 신발이 승강기나 에스컬레이터에 끼어 사고가 났다고 한다.
미 소비자 보호국에서는 다음과 같이 에스컬레이터나 승강기 관련 안전사고를 예방하라고 권장해 여기에 소개한다.

에스컬레이터를 이용 할 때 안전사고 예방

① 유모차나 카트에 소아를 태운채로 에스컬레이터를 타지 말고 꼭 어린 영유아를 앉고 탄다.

② 장갑, 목도리, 신발 또는 옷에 매달인 끈이 에스컬레이터에 걸리지 않게 짧게 매 주거나 적절히 걸친다.

③ 에스컬레이터에 서서 탈 때 어린 영유아의 손을 꼭 잡고 어린 영유아의 얼굴이 타고 가는 방향을 향해 타도도록 한다.

④ 에스컬레이터의 계단에서 놀지 못하게 하고 앉아 있지 못 하게 한다. 에스컬레이터의 가장 자리에 서 있지 않게 한다.

⑤ 에스컬레이터의 응급 정지단추가 어디에 있는지 알려준다.

승강기를 이용할 때 사고 예방

① 승강기를 타려고 들어 갈 때나 나올 때 끼거나 넘어 지지 않게 주의 한다.

② 절대로 어린이 혼자서 승강기를 타지 못하게 한다.

③ 승강기의 문이 닫히지 못하게 하기 위해 손이나 팔 다리를 이용해서는 안 된다고 교육시킨다.
