신생아들이나 영아들의 백내장을 조기에 적절히 치료하지 않으면 백내장으로 시력이 완전히 상실될 수 있다.
선천적 백내장은 만 명의 신생아들 중 0.6~6명에게 나타난다.
선천성 백내장은 3 염색체성 13 증후군,
3 염색체성 21 증후군,
3 염색체성 18 증후군 등 염색체 이상,
태아 알코올 증후군,
선천성 풍진 증후군,
선천성 톡소플라스마 증후군,
갈락토스혈 증 등 단일 유전인자로 인해 생길 수 있다.
정도와 원인에 따라 치료가 다르다.
수술 치료를 요하는 선천성 백내장은 생후 6주 이전에 수술 치료를 해야 한다고 한다.

If cataracts are not treated early and properly in newborns and infants, cataracts can result in complete loss of vision.

Congenital cataracts occur in 0.6 to 6 out of 10,000 newborns.
Congenital cataract is trisomy 13 syndrome,
trisomy 21 syndrome,
chromosomal abnormalities, such as trisomy 18 syndrome;
fetal alcohol syndrome,
congenital rubella syndrome,
congenital toxoplasma syndrome,
It can be caused by a single genetic factor, such as galactosemia.

Treatment varies depending on the severity and cause.

Congenital cataracts that require surgical treatment should be treated surgically before 6 weeks of age.
