▴사진 68. 이렇게 평화스럽고 예쁘고 건강하게 보이는 아기가 보통 때보다 한두 시간 더 자는 것은 별문제가 되지 않을 수 있다. 그러나 어딘가 아픈 신생아가 보통 때보다 더 오래 동안 자면 잘 살펴보고 의사에게 곧 문의하는 것이 좋다.

분만 전, 분만 시, 또는 분만 후 바로 산소 결핍증으로 질식된 신생아,
전신 마취를 받았거나 진통제로 치료를 받으면서 분만한 모체에게 태어난 신생아,
분만 중 산소 결핍증이 있는 모체에게 태어난 신생아.
선천성 바이러스 감염병, 또는 후천성의 바이러스성 감염병이나 박테리아 감염병,
또는 어떤 종류의 중추신경 질환을 앓는 신생아는 잠을 정상 이상으로 많이 잘 수 있다.
그 외 다른 이유로 신생아들이 태어나자마자 비정상적으로 잠을 많이 잘 수 있다.
비정상적으로 잠을 많이 자면 의사에게 바로 문의해야 한다.
