분만 중 산도에 제일 먼저 나온 태아의 신체 부위가 산도로 눌리면 그 부위의 피부가 멍들고 피가 맺히고 부을 수 있다. 이런 갓 태어난 신생아의 체부를 산류라고 한다. 분만 중 태아의 머리가 질 산도 속으로 제일 먼저 나오는 경우가 가장 많다. 따라서 산류가 두피(頭皮)에 가장 많이 생긴다.
때로는 분망 중 태아의 엉덩이, 다리, 또는 얼굴 등이 머리 부위보다 산도 속으로 제일 먼저 나올 수 있다.
이때는 산도 속으로 맨 먼저 나온 엉덩이 등 신체의 선진 부위에 산류가 생길 수 있다.
산류가 생긴 피부는 처음에는 멍든 것처럼 검푸른 색을 띄는 것이 보통이다.
산류의 크기는 여러 가지이다. 산류가 생긴 신체 부위의 피부와 그 주위의 정상 피부의 사이의 한계가 불분명한 것이 보통이다. 드물게 전체 두피에 산류가 크게 생길 수 있다.
산류는 출생 후 바로 나타나고 아무 치료를 하지 않아도 생후 2-3일 내 자연히 없어진다.
