지네, 노래기, 애벌레, 독나방, 이, 사면발니, 모기, 빈대, 벼룩, 진드기, 벌 등의 동물을 통틀어 곤충 또는 절지동물이라 하고 그런 동물에 물리거나 쏘이거나 접촉해 생긴 상처를 통틀어 곤충 물림, 쏘임(Insect bite and sting), 또는 절지동물 물림(Arthropod bite)이라고 한다.
아이들이 개나 고양이 등 애완동물과 놀거나 잔디밭에서 놀거나 산이나 들에 갈 때 진드기, 모기 등에 물리면 그로 인해 피부염이 생길 수 있고 알레르기 반응, 또는 전신 감염병에 걸일 수 있다.
이에 물리면 발진티푸스(Typhus fever)가 발생할 수 있다.
모기에 물린 후 일본 뇌염, 황 열, 말라리아 등에 걸릴 수 있고
진드기에 물리면 라임 병, 쯔쯔가무시병(양충병), 록키산 홍반열 리켓티아 등에 걸릴 수 있다.
들이나 산에 산보 가기 전에 곤충 등이 몸에 달라붙지 않고 곤충 물림이나 쏘임을 예방하는 것이 중요하다. 그런 목적으로 쓰이는 곤충 방충제(Insect repellent)는 여러 종류가 있다.
그 중 피부에 발을 수 있는 방충제로 10% 농도 이하 되는 DEET(Diethyltoluamide)가 가장 효과가 좋고 옥외로 나가기 바로 전에 옷에 뿌려 방충하는데 Permethrin이 가장 효과가 좋다.(출처; Infectious disease in children, August 2005, p.3)
Permethrin은 무명옷에 한번 뿌린 후 세탁기로 5번 세탁하고 드라이 클린을 해도 그 방충제 효과가 있다.
모기장이나 슬리핑 백, 텐트 등에 뿌려 모기에 물리지 않게 할 수 있고 모기향 등으로 방충시킬 수 있다.
모자를 쓰고 긴소매 긴 저고리 바지를 입어 곤충에 물리지 않게 예방할 수 있다.
Permethrin의 상품명에는 Sawyer 등이 있다.
