드물지만 갑상선 기능저하증이 있는 임신부로부터 태어난 아기에게 모유를 수유하는 경우도 있다. 갑상선 기능저하증이 있는 수유모가 그 병을 적절히 치료 받지 않으면, 극도로 피로하고 입맛이 떨어지고 체중이 감소되는 등 여러 가지 증상 징후가 생길 수 있다.
수유할 때는 특히 젖이 충분히 나오지 않을 수 있다. 그러나 갑상선 기능저하증 치료에 쓴 갑상선 호르몬제의 성분은 젖을 먹는 아기에 영향을 주지 않는 것이 보통이다.

갑상선 기능 항진증이 있는 수유모가 아기에게 모유를 수유할 때도 가끔 있다.
갑상선 기능 항진증이 있으면 입맛이 좋아 음식물을 많이 먹는 편이지만, 체중이 감소되고 신경이 과민해지며 심박이 빠르고 땀이 많이 나고 설사 등 갑상선 기능 항진증의 증상이 나타날 수 있다. 수유모의 갑상선 기능 항진증 치료에 흔히 쓰는 ‘Propylthiouracil’ 이란 약물이 젖 먹는 아기에게 별 영향을 주지 않는 것이 보통이다.
갑상선에 생긴 어떤 이상을 진단하기 위해 방사능 옥도 등을 쓸 때도 있다. 방사능 옥도 검사로 진단할 때는 방사능 옥도 검사를 받은 후 적어도 48시간 동안 모유수유를 중단해야 한다.
